Senate committee advises ELEme and Gocana people to own Government projects

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Hassan Mohammed-Gusau who gave the advise during an inspection of projects as part of the committee’s oversight function also lamented the destruction of the water taps recently constructed in the area by some persons.

While inspecting the remediation sites and water projects carried out by the Hydrocarbon Pollution and Remediation Projects (HYPREP) in Gokana and Eleme Local Government Areas of Rivers state, Mohammed-Gusau also advised HYPREP to follow the recommendation of UNEP as they approach the more complex sites in the project.

On his part, The Officer Overseeing the Project Coordination Office of HYPREP, Professor Philip Shekwolo revealed that the project will begin remediation of complex sites in Ogoniland from 2022.

Professor Shekwolo also appealed to the host communities in the various complex sites to cooperate with HYPREP to avoid re-pollution of the environment.
