The Senate mandated its Committees on Judiciary, and National Security and Intelligence to summon the National Security Adviser and the Attorney General of the Federation over the development.
The Federal Lawmakers particularly the attention of the executive to take steps to reverse a law that empowers a vigilante group in Kogi State to bear firearms.
The decision was reached based on a motion moved by Senator DINO MELAYE, who informed his colleagues that Governor YAHAYA BELLO was trying to establish a state police through the back door.
Other lawmakers who spoke in support of the motion include the Minority Leader, Senator GODSWILL AKPABIO.
On his part; Senator MAGNUS ABE of Rivers South-East, also called the attention of his Chamber to a similar armed vigilante group that is about to be established by the Rivers State Government.
However; Senator VICTOR UMEH of APGA from Anambra State, observed that the operation of a vigilante group by the government of his home state has been a success.
Senator UMEH therefore urged the Senate to limit the proscription of vigilante groups only in states where they constitute threat to citizens.
Speaking further, the Deputy Senate President, IKE EKWEREMADU, observed that the security architecture in Nigeria was largely overstretched and as such cannot effectively protect the people.
Other Senators warned that the escalation of the political faceoff between the bigwigs in Kogi State could get out of control and snowball into a major crisis.
However; the Senate rejected an additional prayer to include Rivers State in the investigation of armed vigilante groups set by state government.
