The concerns security experts also stressed the need to halt the trend and mop up weapons in the wrong hands.
They said the feat can be achieved through national action, strengthening of international cooperation and implementation of treaties.
This was the outcome of a one-day ?Strategic Stakeholders Dialogue on Proliferation of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Nigeria in Abuja.
In his presentation, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons, EMMANUEL IMOHE said ?Nigerian is among countries that are experiencing the most devastating effects of the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
IMOHE said the trend is as a result of unresolved internal conflicts in different parts of the country, especially in the North East and the Niger Delta regions.
However; IMOHE assured that government was working out variety of measures to regulate lawful arms trade.
Our correspondent reports that statistics obtained by the United National indicate that Nigeria accounts for over three hundred and fifty million small arms and light weapons that are in circulation across West African. ?
