The strikes were targeted at Islamic State fighters near the town of al-Bab but accidentally struck Turkish soldiers who helping Syrian rebels in a battle to recapture the town.
The tragedy comes as Turkey and Russia are trying to warm up relations, and President VLADIMIR PUTIN has sent condolences to Ankara.
PUTIN reportedly told President RECEP TAYYIP ERDOGAN that poor co-ordination between Moscow and Ankara was to blame for the accident.
Russia and Turkey are backing opposing sides in the Syrian war, but have been jointly conducting air strikes against the Islamic State in the town in recent weeks.
