Riverss Assembly sits despite Court order

During the session, the lawmakers reportedly elected Major Jack, the member representing Akuku-Toru, as the new Leader of the House.

The House similarly elected Frankline Nwabochi, the member representing Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Constituency One, as the new Whip of the House.

The lawmakers also reportedly passed a vote of confidence in the leadership of Amaewhule as Speaker of the House.

A former governorship candidate in the general election in 2019 in Rivers state, Richard Dekaae, says yesterday’s sitting of the Rivers State House of Assembly amounts to contempt of court.

Dekaae, during an interview with our correspondent, vilified the Martin Amaehwule-led faction of flouting the ruling of a court.

Speaking further, Dekaae appealed to the Commissioner of Police and in the Inspector General of Police to be neutral while also appealing to President Bola Tinubu to weigh into the matter to ensure peace is sustained in Rivers State.

In the meantime, the Rivers State Civil Society Organizations, RIVCSO, has accused the state police command of being partisan and bias in the crisis rocking the state House of Assembly.

The Spokesman of the group, Solomon Lenu, in an interview with Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiowhor, expressed concern that the police who are supposed to be neutral and ensure the speedy resolution of the crisis are the ones providing cover for a faction of the Assembly against the orders of a court.

Lenu alleged that the immediate-past commissioner of police toed the same line that the current CP is toeing and was shown the way out and warned that the group would no longer tolerate such actions by the police.

The RIVCSO spokesman advised the Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to ensure that the decision and orders of the court are adhered to by not giving access to any faction of the House of Assembly, pending the determination of the suit before the court.

Similarly, some concerned youths of River State have sent a Save-Our-Soul message to President Bola Tinubu over the activities of some individuals who they accused of trying to create unrest and make the state ungovernable.

Convener of the group Chimaroke Ogbonna, in an interview with Today FM, accused the immediate-past governor, Nyesom Wike, of masterminding the actions of the embattled speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule- led House of Assembly.

Ogbonna also blamed the police of alleged complicity, warning that Rivers people would not fold their arms and watch a repeat of acts lawlessness in the state.

He called on the Inspector of Police to call both the State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, and the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, WIKE, to order to avoid a breach of the peace.

Meanwhile, the former Clerk of the Rivers State House of Assembly who was transferred from the Assembly Service Commission to the state Scholarship Board Emeka Amadi, was sighted at the Assembly Complex during yesterday’s plenary.

Recall that the Rivers State Government redeployed Emeka Amadi and his deputy, Calistus Ojirika, about a fortnight ago, following the crisis at the House of Assembly.

A memo from the State Head of Service, George Nweke, said Amadi had been redeployed to the Scholarship Board whereas Ojirika, who doubles as Head of Legislative Department in the House of Assembly, was posted to the Readers Project.

However, the factional Speaker of the House, Martin Amaehwule, had countered the postings, declaring them to be unconstitutional and without effect.

Meanwhile, Amadi’s employers, the Rivers State Government, is yet to react to this development.
