Rivers state re-run elections insecurity a major challenge

A new report on the elections of nearly two years ago also identified irregularities as another setback to the polls.

The observations were made in a nationwide post-election research conducted by a nongovernmental organization known as Stakeholders Democracy Network.

The findings for Rivers State were made by election observers posted by SDN to some local government areas across the state, during a presentation in Port Harcourt.

SDN Program Manager, FLORENCE KEYEMBA-IBOKABASI said the essence of the research was to ascertain the level of citizens participation in the electoral process.

Based on the outcome of the report, FLORENCE KEYEMBA-IBOKABASI made a case for increased participation of citizens in elections, especially the women folks.

The Rivers State Director of the National Orientation Agency, OLIVER WOLUBOM who was also present at the event, stressed the need for improved citizens’ education as a means of strengthening the electoral process in the state.]

Our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA reports that the security agencies and the Independent National Electoral Commission were all represented at the presentation of the election research report.
