The state commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku made the statement during an event to mark the 2021 World Teachers Day in Port Harcourt.
The commissioner also said the pronouncement by President Muhammadu Buhari for teachers retirement age to be extended by five years is not binding on the state governments.
The commissioner who represented Governor Nyesom Wike at the event said the Education is on the concurrent list in the constitution and as such the states are liberty to adopt their own policy.
While acknowledging that teachers deserve increased pay as well extension of retirement age, the commissioner noted that the pronouncement of the president has not been passed at National Assembly for the states to adopt.
