Rivers State Flood Committee Commended by NEMA for Swift Action

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-South region gave the commended the initiative, urging the committee to act swiftly in implementing its plan of action.

In an interview with Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiohwor, NEMA’s Zonal Coordinator for South-South, Adebiyi Babatunde-Razak, expressed confidence in the committee, which is chaired by Deputy Governor Professor Ngozi Odu.

Babatunde-Razak emphasized the importance of sensitizing flood-prone communities and preparing higher grounds as safe spaces for internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, stressing the need to stockpile food, medical supplies, and other essential items for those affected by potential flooding.

Babatunde-Razak recommended that the committee encourage the desilting of blocked water channels leading to major water bodies, highlighting the importance of disseminating early warning information in local languages to improve awareness at the grassroots level.

The next meeting is scheduled for Friday at 2 PM, with the CTC Chairmen of the eighteen affected local government areas expected to attend.
