The Bill which was sponsored by member representing Emohua constituency was passed after debate by members of the House who said the Bill is being domesticated in Rivers state because of an existing Federal Act and meant to repeal the principal law known as the Rivers State Dehumanizing and Harmful Practices Abolition Law number two of 2003.
Speaker of the House, IKUINYI OWAJI-IGBANI in his submission said the current Assembly is committed to protecting the rights of women and the girl-child in Rivers state by abolishing harmful Traditional Practices.
Earlier, member representing Ogu-Bolo State Constituency, EVANS BIPI while supporting the Billl, had suggested that the House considers traditions of some communities so that it does not clash with the bill.
Our correspondent VICTOR EZEAMA reports that the bill recommends two-year jail term or five hundred thousand option of fine for violators of the Law.
