The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Rivers State has called on local government chairmen across the state to prioritise workers’ welfare through regular payment of salaries, improved staff welfare, and continuous capacity development.
The union made the appeal during a courtesy visit to the Rivers State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON).
Speaking during the visit, the newly elected State President of NULGE, Anthony Lenyie, stressed that local government administration operates as a unified system across Rivers State and Nigeria. He urged council chairmen not to withhold workers’ salaries or deny employees their legitimate entitlements, noting that the welfare of local government staff should remain a top priority.
Responding, the Chairman of ALGON in Rivers State and Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, Allwell Ihunda, assured the union that no legitimate local government worker would have their salaries or allowances withheld.
Ihunda, however, called for the immediate release of the report of the Council Staff Biometrics and Verification Exercise ordered by Governor Siminalayi Fubara in November 2025, saying the report is necessary to address outstanding issues affecting local government administration in the state.
