The Rivers State Government has restated its commitment to youth development, unity, and peace as the state joined the rest of the world to mark the 2025 International Youth Day.
The three-day event, organised by the Ministry of Youth Development, was held at the Dr. Obi Wali International Conference Centre in Port Harcourt.
Speaking at the grand finale, the State Administrator, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Ibibia Lucky Worika, described the celebration as historic. He highlighted several government initiatives targeted at empowering young people, including the revival of the Youth Resource Centre, introduction of Behavioral Modification Training, rehabilitation of Songhai Farms, upgrading of sports facilities, and restructuring of microfinance schemes to support youth enterprise.
He further urged young people to shun violence in the forthcoming local government elections and instead serve as ambassadors of peace, discipline, and unity.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ruhuoma Chinedu Kejeh, said the celebration provided Rivers youth with an opportunity to embrace innovation, partnerships, and reconciliation.
Highlights of the event included the Youth for Excellence Awards, seminars, exhibitions, and cultural performances, which attracted over 3,000 participants.
