The lawmaker representing Obio/Akpor Constituency in the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, Senator Olaka Nwogu, former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Ikuinyi Ibani amongst other lawmakers vehemently opposed any attempt by the governor to demolish the building.
Speaking to newsmen after inspecting the facility, Ikuinyi Ibani, criticized Governor Fubara’s alleged plan to renovate the building, urging him to responsibly manage state resources, rather than demolish a structure previously hailed as excellent by former Federal House Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who commissioned the structure.
On his part, Kingsley Chinda who noted that the integrity report received from a team of engineers shows there is nothing wrong with the building, urged the governor to focus on improving other areas instead of the assembly quarters.
In addition, Senator Olaka Nwogu emphasized that any threat to the Rivers State Assembly Quarters undermines democracy, adding that the Governor should uphold law and order.
Meanwhile the Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State, Chief Tony Okocha, says he will do everything possible to protect the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly from the interference of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Chief Okocha who was present at the assembly quarters after touring the facility, said the lawmakers are now under his jurisdiction, after their defection to the APC.
He added that he would resist Governor Fubara’s alleged attempts to merge the executive and legislative branches.
