The Chief Security Officer of Alakahia Community in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Anele Noble-Dike, has attributed the increasing attacks on local security personnel to the enemies they make while combating criminal activities in their communities.
Speaking with Today FM’s Preye Izogu, Noble-Dike called for retired police officers, serving Chief Security Officers and former community security chiefs to be allowed to obtain licensed firearms for self-defence against criminal attacks.
He said community security personnel often become targets because of their efforts in exposing and confronting criminals, leaving them vulnerable even after leaving office.
Noble-Dike also appealed to community leaders and all levels of government to provide support for the families of local security personnel killed in the line of duty, noting that many of them serve voluntarily without adequate welfare or protection.
He further lamented that despite receiving intelligence on planned attacks, community security outfits are often unable to act proactively due to inadequate funding and a lack of operational resources.
His comments come amid a series of attacks on local security personnel in Rivers State, including the recent killing of a former Chief Security Officer of Khana Local Government Area, Letam Kinee, and separate attacks that claimed the lives of four persons, including an OSPAC operative, while another OSPAC member was kidnapped in Ipo Community, Ikwerre Local Government Area.
