Rivers Chief Judge grants pardon to 37 inmates awaiting trial

Justice Chibuzor-Amadi, in his speech during the jail delivery exercise, at the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, blamed operatives of Nigerian Police on the high level of congestion experienced in the facility.

The Chief Judge accused the police of preferring frivolous charges and deliberately charging inmates to courts that have no jurisdiction, without proper investigation on the matter, charging policemen to ensure proper investigation on a matter before charging suspects to court.

Justice Chibuzor-Amadi, while calling on all those involved in administration of justice to collaborate to ensure the decongestion of the prisons, directed judges handling criminal matters to ensure the conclusion of the such matter as enshrined in the new High Court procedure rules.

Justice Chibuzor-Amadi revealed that the Port Harcourt Correctional Center has the highest number of inmates in west Africa, but assured that the judiciary under his watch will continue to ensure decongestion of the facility.

Today FM Uchendu Ejiowhor reports that the Chief Judge, however, advised the released inmates to be a better citizens as they return to the society.

In his welcome address, the State Comptroller of the Nigerian Correctional Center, Alex Oditah, commended the state judiciary for their continuous efforts aimed at decongesting the prisons.
