Rivers Assembly Moves to Domesticate Climate Change Act

The Rivers State House of Assembly says it has commenced work on domesticating the Climate Change Act to strengthen environmental governance in the state.

Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol disclosed this during a public presentation of a community-led research report on loss and damage in Ogoniland, organised in Port Harcourt by the African Indigenous Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development. He said a public hearing will be held on the proposed legislation to allow stakeholders make inputs before passage into law.

At the event, Chairman of Khana Local Government Area, Dr. Thomas Bariere, stressed the need for stronger partnerships with relevant organisations to effectively tackle climate change and its impacts on communities.

Earlier, the Executive Director of the African Indigenous Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development, Legborsi Pyagbara, said the research was conducted to identify practical solutions for addressing the effects of environmental challenges confronting local communities.
