The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised FCT Minister Nyesom Wike over his recent comments that former Rivers Governor Rotimi Amaechi is unfit to be a vice-presidential candidate because of the closure of courts during his tenure.
Wike had accused Amaechi of shutting down the state’s courts for nearly two years, arguing that such a record should count against his bid for the vice presidency.
In a statement, ADC State Publicity Secretary, Chizi Enyi, described Wike’s position as “political hypocrisy,” arguing that the judicial crisis during Amaechi’s administration involved wider disagreements among state authorities and the National Judicial Council over the appointment of a Chief Judge.
Enyi also accused Wike of inconsistency, citing his alleged support for the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which he said would suspend democratic institutions. He further listed several policies and actions he attributed to Wike’s tenure as governor, including the withdrawal of overseas scholarships, the disbandment of TIMARIV and alleged disobedience of court orders.
The ADC spokesperson said Amaechi’s eight years as governor and subsequent service as Transportation Minister should be judged by his record rather than political statements.
He challenged Wike to demonstrate consistency on issues concerning democracy and the judiciary, insisting that the 2027 elections would be decided by the records of political leaders and not rhetoric. (punchng.com)
