In the petition, obtained by Today FM, the International Human Rights Protection Initiative highlights concerns over directives issued by the Rumuepirikom Community Development Committee (CDC) Chairman and Secretary, prohibiting political gatherings in support of the current governor of the state.
According to the petition, the CDC Chairman and Secretary, in a statement circulated on social media, have warned that any such gatherings in support of the governor must obtain permission from their office before proceeding.
The petition noted that the directives are deemed illegal and a violation of human rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Consequently, the group urged the Commissioner of Police to intervene promptly and urged restraint among the parties involved in the interest of maintaining peace.
In an interview with Today FM’s UCHENDU EJIOWHOR, the State Coordinator of the group, JOHN IHUA, emphasized their commitment to safeguarding human rights and preventing a recurrence of past conflicts in Rumuepirikom witnessed between 2013 and 2015.
