Rights Group Defends Magnus Abe Over Political Views

A civil society organisation, Defence for Human Rights and Democracy, has condemned what it described as persistent attacks and insults directed at Senator Magnus Abe over his political opinions and public comments.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Christopher Clifford Solomon, the group described Abe as a respected statesman who has served Rivers State and the nation in several elective and appointive capacities.

The organisation stated that the Chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission has a constitutional right to express his political views without facing abuse or personal attacks.

The group noted that while some individuals and organisations had criticised Abe’s political positions, none had publicly disputed the facts contained in his recent remarks.

It urged political actors and their supporters to embrace tolerance and civility, stressing that politics should remain a contest of ideas rather than a platform for hostility. The organisation also called on leaders within and outside Ogoniland to promote peaceful engagement and respect for differing opinions.
