Some residents of Rivers State have voiced strong dissatisfaction with the appointment of Michael Ekpai Odeyas as the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC). In interviews with news outlets, they described the decision as an affront to the people of the state.
The residents argued that key political positions, especially those crucial to the democratic process, should be occupied by Rivers indigenes to promote local representation and inclusivity. They emphasized the importance of appointing individuals with strong ties to the state to ensure the integrity of electoral processes.
However, not all responses to Dr. Odeyas’ appointment have been negative. A different group of residents commended the decision, suggesting that his non-indigenous background and lack of political affiliation could serve as advantages. They believe that such qualities might help promote fairness and transparency in the conduct of upcoming local elections.
