The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to allocate the forfeited Abuja estate linked to former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele, to low- and middle-income earners, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and other vulnerable groups.
This followed the adoption of a motion sponsored by Jafaru Gambo Leko on the “Need for Transparent and Equitable Allocation of Forfeited Abuja Estate handed over to the Ministry of Housing by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).”
Leko, while presenting the motion, said the estate—recently transferred to the Ministry of Housing by the EFCC—should not be left idle or cornered by privileged individuals. He stressed that the assets, having been recovered for the public, ought to serve the interest of ordinary Nigerians struggling to access affordable housing.
The House, therefore, urged the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to ensure transparency and fairness in the allocation process. It also called for proper oversight to prevent the diversion of the property to politically connected persons or groups.
Lawmakers further mandated the relevant committees to monitor compliance and report back to the House within a stipulated timeframe.
