Reps Panel Seeks Special Court to Tackle Crude Oil Theft

The House of Representatives Special Committee on Crude Oil Theft has called for the establishment of a special court to ensure the speedy prosecution of individuals involved in crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism across the country.

The committee said the activities of oil thieves continue to undermine Nigeria’s economy, reduce government revenue, and threaten national security. It also advocated a review of existing laws to impose stiffer penalties that would serve as a stronger deterrent against offenders.

Chairman of the committee, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, said the recommendations emerged during a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at identifying practical solutions to the persistent challenge of crude oil theft. He stressed that stronger legal and institutional measures are needed to protect Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.
