BAN reportedly made the appeal during a telephone conversation with South Africa’s President JACOB ZUMA.
The office of the UN Secretary General was quoted confirming that BAN expressed his appreciation for South Africa’s continued and unwavering commitment to justice and hoped it would reconsider its decision.
You may note that South Africa took the decision to quit the ICC earlier this month on ground that it was an obstacle to efforts to promote peace in Africa.
You will also recall that the South African government had last year refused to arrest Sudan’s President OMAR AL-BASHIR who is wanted by the ICC for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur region.
In addition to South Africa, Burundi and The Gambia have also announced their intention to withdraw from the ICC.
