President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Rome, the capital of Italy, to attend the Aqaba Process Meeting of Heads of State and Government, a high-level security summit jointly convened by the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the Italian government.
The meeting, which brings together global leaders, security experts, and policymakers, focuses on addressing the growing security challenges in West Africa and the Sahel region, including terrorism, insurgency, and transnational organized crime.
According to a statement from the Presidency, President Tinubu’s participation underscores Nigeria’s commitment to regional and global efforts aimed at strengthening security cooperation, countering violent extremism, and promoting stability across Africa.
The Aqaba Process, launched in 2015 by King Abdullah II of Jordan, serves as a strategic platform for fostering international collaboration on security and counterterrorism. This year’s session in Rome will specifically examine the evolving threats in West Africa and propose coordinated responses involving military, intelligence, and socio-economic interventions.
President Tinubu is expected to deliver a statement highlighting Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat insecurity, including reforms in defense strategy, border control, and regional partnerships through the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
He will also participate in closed-door sessions with other world leaders to discuss practical measures for intelligence sharing, combating the proliferation of small arms, and tackling the root causes of instability such as poverty, unemployment, and political exclusion.
The Nigerian delegation includes senior government officials and representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
The summit, which runs for two days, will culminate in the adoption of a joint communiqué outlining renewed commitments to collaborative security frameworks in West Africa and beyond.
