The Presidency has fired back at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, stating that he lacks the moral credibility to criticise President Bola Tinubu over the country’s deteriorating security situation.
Obasanjo, speaking at an event in Jos, Plateau State, on Friday, had expressed deep worry over the rising wave of insecurity across Nigeria. He argued that the government’s inability to adequately safeguard its citizens could give Nigerians legitimate grounds to call for foreign intervention.
In a swift response, the Presidency dismissed Obasanjo’s remarks, accusing the former president of presiding over the period when terrorism began to take root in the country. According to government sources, many of the security challenges Nigeria currently grapples with were inherited from Obasanjo’s administration, making his criticism misplaced.
The Presidency maintained that the Tinubu administration is taking decisive steps to combat insecurity and urged Nigerians to be wary of what it described as attempts by past leaders to evade responsibility for the nation’s long-standing security woes.
