President NKURUNZIZA had been trapped within the confines of the country since surviving an attempted coup in May, 2015.
Reports from Bujumbura indicate that the President is leading a number of senior ministers to Tanzania, which is home to about a quarter of a million Burundian refugees.
NKURUNZIZA’s decision to run for a third term in office sparked crisis, which forced many Burundians to flee the country.
Hundreds of people, mainly alleged opposition supporters, have also been killed since the crisis began.
