In observance of World Adoption Day, residents of Port Harcourt are urging that all children be treated equally, emphasizing that no child should face discrimination based on their birth or adoption status.
World Adoption Day, celebrated annually on November 9th, highlights the voices of the adoption community, sharing personal stories and reflecting on the importance of adoption.
Speaking with our reporter Emelda Ifeme, some residents expressed concern that adopted children are sometimes treated harshly by parents after the arrival of biological children.
Meanwhile, Former Chairperson of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State, Adata Bio-Briggs, said the adoption process in the state is closely supervised by the Ministry of Child Welfare to ensure the best interests of every adopted child are safeguarded. She also commended FIDA for its continued role as a societal watchdog protecting the rights and welfare of children across Rivers State.
Bio-Briggs further highlighted the need for greater public awareness on the legal distinctions between adoption, fostering, and guardianship, to ensure children’s rights are fully understood and protected.
