Port Harcourt Motorists Applaud Rivers Assembly for Summoning Transport Ministry, VIO Over Alleged Extortion

Some motorists in Port Harcourt have commended the Rivers State House of Assembly for summoning officials of the Ministry of Transport and Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) over alleged extortion and harassment.

The Assembly, last week, directed the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and the Chief VIO Officer to appear before it to explain measures taken to curb what lawmakers described as persistent, excessive harassment and unprofessional conduct by some VIO officers operating across the state.

Reacting to the lawmakers’ intervention, several motorists who spoke with our correspondent expressed relief, saying the actions of certain VIO officers have subjected them to untold hardship. They accused the officials of arbitrary fines, intimidation, and unnecessary impoundment of vehicles, stressing that the situation has become unbearable.

The motorists urged the Assembly to follow through on the probe and ensure that concrete reforms are implemented to restore sanity to road enforcement operations in the state.
