The Federal Ministry of Environment has also confirmed a notice of temporary shutdown of an asphalt processing plant in Port Harcourt that is belching out thick smoke from its operation, as part of strategies to bring the situation under control.
The Ministry noted that the Federal Government was aware of the negative effects of the black soot menace on socio-economic, health and environmental impact, and has taken steps to mobilize all major stakeholders to address the problem.
A statement signed by an official in the Ministry, EFE OVUAKPORIE, noted that the sources of the pollution are diffuse and man-made, which are as result of open air and incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons, burning of wastes and vegetation, burning of tyres, asphalt processing and illegal artisanal refinery operations.
The Ministry therefore enjoined the public to remain calm and take adequate measures to protect themselves by adhering to health guidelines that would be issued by the Health Authorities.
Residents of Port Harcourt and environs are also advised to always ensure that their windows and doors are firmly shut when necessary.
