Police Inspector TIMOTHY SAMUEL has been condemned to die by hanging, nearly five years after he was accused of killing unarmed ONYEKACHI NWASORUBA at his home, off Old Aba Road in Port Harcourt. Justice ADOLPHUS ENEBELI of the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt described Inspector TIMOTHY as an inhumane, trigger-happy policeman who engages in murder. During the trial, the convicted police inspector had maintained that the slain graduate of Industrial Chemistry from the Rivers State University of Science and Technology was an armed robber.
But in his ruling after the prolonged trial, Justice ENEBELI described the convict as a hater of humankind and a merciless killer, who shot his victim even after he surrendered and revealed that he was actually a sachet water seller. Our correspondent recalls that the slain ONYEKACHI NWASORUBA used to distribute sachet water around Oil Mill area of Port Harcourt before he was shot dead by Inspector TIMOTHY SAMUEL around 5AM on 10th of November, 2010 at house number 34, along Old Aba road. Another police officer Corporal OBEDIAH MOSES who was also accused of the same crime, was however discharged and acquitted by the court. Counsel to the convicted police inspector, M.J HARRY had pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercy, while the lawyer to the acquitted corporal, DANAGOGO IBOROMA told newsmen that the judgment should serve as a point for reflection. The prosecuting counsel, CORDELLIA EKE welcomed the judgment, just as CHURCHILL IBENECHE, who is counsel to the family of the murdered youth, said the judgment will serve as a deterrent to other careless and ruthless police officers.  Correspondent VICTOR EZEAMA reports that the condemned Inspector TIMOTHY SAMUEL had served the Nigeria Police Force for more than thirty years before he was caught up with the law.
