The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publicly release the academic certificates and other credentials submitted by all candidates seeking elective office, saying the move would promote transparency and strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Obi made the call after completing his INEC nomination form, noting that one of the questions on the form asks whether a candidate has ever presented a forged certificate to the electoral body. He argued that if such declarations are required, the supporting documents should also be made available for public scrutiny.
According to the former Anambra State governor, publishing candidates’ credentials would help ensure that those seeking public office comply with the rules and would enhance the credibility of the electoral process.
Obi also questioned the quality of leadership in the country, saying Nigeria’s worsening insecurity and economic challenges require competent, transparent and accountable leaders. He maintained that greater openness would strengthen democracy, build public trust, and improve the integrity of future elections.
