FEC Approves Major Reform of NYSC, Civilian to Head Scheme

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme in its 53-year history.

As part of the reforms, the Council directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Federal Ministry of Youth to amend the NYSC Act and its regulations to accommodate the approved changes and ensure their immediate implementation.

A key feature of the reform is the restructuring of the scheme’s leadership, with the operational head of the NYSC to be a civilian. The military will, however, continue to play a role in providing security for corps members across the country.

The Federal Government said the reforms are aimed at modernising the NYSC, improving its operations, and strengthening its capacity to meet the needs of national development while ensuring the safety and welfare of corps members.
