The Commander General of the Organized Security Peace and Advisory Committee (OSPAC), Emeka Onyeocha, has urged the National Assembly to focus on establishing state police rather than introducing local government police units.
Onyeocha said policing at the local government level could be easily compromised, noting that effective security depends heavily on secrecy and intelligence gathering. He stressed that such requirements may not be properly managed at the third tier of government.
Speaking to Today FM’s Preye Izogu, the OSPAC commander stated that security must be treated as a priority across all levels of governance. He also disclosed that OSPAC is stepping up efforts to tackle the activities of criminal herders in its operational areas, working closely with security agencies to forestall attacks in Rivers State.
Onyeocha acknowledged minor reports of herders clashing with farmers but maintained that the situation remains far less severe compared to some parts of Northern Nigeria. He further called on state and local governments, as well as security agencies, to properly regulate vigilante groups, warning against unidentified groups wearing unknown uniforms and carrying arms, which he said could be linked to questionable elements.
