Vice Chairman of the Maritime Workers Union in Opobo town, Siminialayi Benjamin, expressed his concerns during an interview with Today FM’s Preye Izogu at Opobo Town.
He explained that the fares charged by the affiliate union in Akwa Ibom state has been jacked up to one thousand three hundred naira, while their Opobo counterparts, who cover the same searoute, continue to charge only one thousand naira.
He said the discrepancy in the fare has sparked dissatisfaction among traders in Opobo town, who argue that it is unfair for passengers traveling the same route to be subjected to different fare rates solely based on their departure point.
Benjamin added that with the increment, prices of goods and services will continue to surge in the town.
