The swearing in of the Chief Justice was performed by Nigeria’s Acting President, Professor YEMI OSINBAJO.
The ceremony comes a week after Justice ONNOGHEN was confirmed for the appointment by the Nigerian Senate.
In his remarks during the ceremony at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Professor OSINBAJO reminded the new Chief Justice of Nigeria of the challenge ahead.
The Acting President said the fate of millions of Nigerians who are in need of justice has been placed in his hands.
In his response; Justice ONNOGHEN vowed to observe the rule of law and promote the independence of the judiciary.
Justice ONNOGHEN becomes the 17th indigenous Chief Justice of Nigeria, and the first to be appointed to the position from Cross River State.
He hails from Okurike town in Biase Local Government Area of Cross Rivers State, and was first appointed to the Supreme Court in 2005.
Before now, Justice ONNOGHEN has been manning the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria in acting capacity, following his appointment by President MUHAMMADU BUHARI on 10th November last year.
