The Nigeria Union of Journalists has criticised the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over its latest regulations issued to broadcast stations.
Chairman of the NUJ in Rivers State, Paul Bazia, described the move as an attempt to gag the media, expressing concerns that the new rules could threaten press freedom in the country. He also raised issues with the composition of the NBC management, questioning its structure and decisions.
In a related reaction, Port Harcourt-based journalist, Olalekan Ige, urged the NBC to exercise caution to avoid creating unnecessary tension. He noted that the regulations appear targeted at restricting the operations of broadcast organisations ahead of next year’s elections.
