Authorities in Pyongyang announced on state television that North Korean leader KIM JONG-UN oversaw the launch of the Hwasong-14 missile.
This marks the first time North Korea has claimed to have successfully tested an intercontinental ballistic missile, which could potentially target the United States mainland.
US authorities have also confirmed that a missile landed in the Sea of Japan, but it did not pose a threat to North America.
