Staff working on the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Train 7 project in Bonny, Rivers State, have embarked on a protest over alleged irregular tax deductions.
The demonstration, which began on Monday, is being spearheaded by employees under Daewoo Contractors.
Some of the protesting workers, who spoke to Today FM’s Ifunanya Obeme-Ndukwe on the condition of anonymity, alleged that each staff member has faced monthly deductions of about ₦150,000 for tax clearance over the past two years. Despite the deductions, they claimed they have not been issued Tax Identification Numbers (TINs).
They further alleged that an audit revealed irregularities, indicating that the deducted taxes were never remitted to the federal government.
The workers are demanding the immediate release of their TINs as well as a refund of all monies deducted from their salaries over the past two years.
A member of the communications team at NLNG, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak, assured that the company would give an appropriate response after investigation.
