The position of the national leadership of the NLC was contained in a goodwill message to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
According to a text of the message signed by NLC National President, ALIYU WABBA, the labour union said it decided to break its tradition of not sending message on Democracy Day because of concern about the recent revelation by the Chief of Army Staff.
WABBA noted that the damage caused by military incursion in politics in Nigeria for decades is largely responsible for the underdevelopment of the nation’s political culture in close to sixty years of independence.
He called on the Chief of Army Staff to go beyond informing Nigerians and cautioning those allegedly plotting to derail democratic governance to desist.
The NLC wants the leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces to identify the individuals involved and prosecute them in the relevant courts, adding that anyone found guilty should be given appropriate punishment.
The Nigeria Labour Congress called on all elected political office holders, from the local council to the states and the Federal Government, to rededicate themselves to service.
