Nigeria has been ranked the most football-obsessed country in Africa, according to a new study that assessed fan engagement, online interest, and football culture across the continent.
The report highlighted Nigeria’s deep-rooted passion for football, noting that the sport dominates conversations, social interactions, and entertainment across the country. From local viewing centres to social media platforms, football remains one of the most followed and discussed topics among Nigerians.
The study found that Nigeria’s large population, vibrant fan communities, and widespread following of both domestic and international competitions contributed to its top ranking. The country’s enthusiasm for football has also been strengthened by the success of the Super Eagles and the popularity of European leagues among Nigerian supporters.
Analysts say the ranking reflects football’s enduring role as a cultural force in Nigeria, where the game continues to unite millions of people across different regions, age groups, and backgrounds while driving significant engagement across digital platforms.
