Speaking at the second Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence in Port Harcourt, an Environmental Rights Activist, Nnimmo Bassey expressed concern that government and relevant agencies are yet to address issues of the region for over fifty years.
Bassey who is the Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation, demanded for immediate audit of the entire Niger Delta region, covering health, livelihood social and economic impact of crude oil, gas extraction, remediation and restoration of impacted territories for the damage suffered.
Bassey further called on legislators to review the Petroleum Industrial Act, to remove the clauses against communities and for immediate public release of forensic audit report of the Niger Delta Development Commission and the review of the law handling that agency.
In his address, His Royal Majesty, King Suanu Baridam who was the Chairman of the occasion, blamed leaders of the Niger Delta representing the people in government for the problems faced in the region.
