Twenty-eight-year-old Afghan-born AHMAD KHAN RAHAMI was taken into custody after sustaining gunshot injury in a shootout with security operatives in New Jersey.
The arrest has sparked a fresh debate in the build-up to the US presidential election in November.
The Republican nominee, DONALD TRUMP said it was a sad situation and underscores the country’s weak national security that public funds would be spent on treatment of the suspect.
But his Democratic rival HILLARY CLINTON said TRUMP’s rhetoric only helped terrorist groups.
