JOÃO LOURENÇO takes over from JOSE EDUARDO DOS SANTOS who stepped down last month after thirty-eight years in power.
The incoming President, who previously served as defense minister, is not expected to make a radical shift in government policy, having been a part of the governing Popular Liberation Movement of Angola for decades.
DOS SANTOS will retain control over the MPLA party, with the right to choose the police chief and head of the army.
His children – including Africa’s richest woman, ISABEL DOS SANTOS – have been positioned to control the economy.
