Nepal’s new interim prime minister, Sushila Karki, has pledged to address protesters’ demands to end corruption as she assumed office following the ouster of her predecessor by nationwide youth-led demonstrations.
Karki, a 73-year-old former chief justice, was appointed to steer the country through a turbulent transition after weeks of “Gen Z” protests forced the resignation of the previous government.
She promised to restore order and rebuild public trust by prioritizing transparency and accountability in governance. Her interim administration is expected to oversee preparations for national elections scheduled in six months.
The protests, driven largely by young Nepalis frustrated with political corruption and economic stagnation, have been described as one of the most significant popular movements in the country in recent years.
