Director general of NEMA Mustafa Habib Ahmed who made this known during the official hand over of relief materials to the state government through the task force committee on flood said creation of the state and local government emergency management agency will help in advocacy and manage disaster risks in the state.
Mustafa who was represented by Abdullahi Bandele sympathized with the flood victims saying that in order to achieve and deliberate action that will lead to substantial reduction of flood disaster risk and losses of livelihood in line with the global aspiration as contained in the Sendai frame work for disaster risk reduction that they need to look into what happened, why and how they could prevent a repetition.
He urged state government to take all advantage of early warning alerts from necessary agencies and also ensure that new infrastructure does not introduce new risks.
He further advised government at all levels to have the political will to invest in disaster risk reduction activities through adequate budget appropriations in lieu to the national flood response plan that was recently approved by federal government.
While receiving the goods, chairman of the rivers state flood task force committee George Nweke expressed happiness over the donation as he said they have been doing all they can to ensure that people affected by flood are safe.
Todayfm Sandra Kenneth reports that one thousand bags of rice, beans, maize, other food items, including nylon mats, treated mosquito nets, wrappers, and clothes were given to the rivers state government.
Further reports that two thousand one hundred bags of 50kg maize, one thousand seven hundred and seventy four 50kg sorghum and three thousand nine hundred and forty eight bags of garri were also approved for rivers state out of the twelve thousand metric tons of assorted grain from the national strategic reserve for distribution to all states of the federation.
