NBA President, Rights Groups Criticise Police Plan to Resume Tinted Glass Permit Enforcement

The Nigeria Police Force has come under criticism following its plan to resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy from the 2nd of next month.

Reacting to the development, President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Afam Osigwe, accused the police of disregarding the rule of law. In a statement, Osigwe said the planned enforcement amounts to executive recklessness and portrays the Nigeria Police Force and its leadership as lacking respect for the courts, the rule of law, and due process.

He described the policy as unconstitutional, illegal, extortionate, and a threat to citizens’ rights and economic well-being, insisting that its enforcement should not proceed under the current circumstances.

Similarly, human rights lawyer, Higher King, called on the police to abandon the plan, warning that commencing enforcement while the matter is still before the courts would amount to an affront to the judiciary.

However, a security analyst, Stanley Nsofor, expressed a contrary view. Speaking to correspondent Ofonime Okon, Nsofor said the enforcement of tinted glass permits could aid crime prevention and enhance security efforts across the country.

Meanwhile, the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, had on Monday announced that enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy would resume in January, citing a rise in vehicle-related crimes as the reason for the decision.
