MOSOP Faults 3% Allocation to Host Communities in Petroleum Industry Act

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) has criticised the three percent allocation to host communities as provided in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), describing it as inadequate.

Addressing journalists, MOSOP President, Andah Wai-Ogosu, said the three percent earmarked for host communities is grossly insufficient, particularly for communities in the Niger Delta region that bear the environmental and social impact of oil exploration.

He stressed that the Niger Delta remains the mainstay of Nigeria’s economy and therefore deserves a more substantial share of the benefits derived from oil resources.

Wai-Ogosu also expressed concern over the Federal Government’s move to remit revenues accruing from oil exploration into the Federation Account, warning that such action could undermine the principles of ownership and resource control for the people of the Niger Delta.

He called for a review of the allocation framework to ensure fairness and justice for oil-producing communities.
