META TO CUT 8,000 JOBS IN MAY AMID AI PUSH

By Paul Chimodo

Tech giant Meta Platforms has announced plans to lay off about 8,000 employees in May as part of a major restructuring effort driven by increased investment in artificial intelligence.

The job cuts represent roughly 10 percent of the company’s global workforce and are expected to take effect from May 20.

The company is also set to scrap about 6,000 open roles it had previously planned to fill, signaling a broader shift toward leaner operations.

The move comes as Meta intensifies spending on AI infrastructure, including data centres, advanced models, and new technologies aimed at improving efficiency and competitiveness.

Executives say the layoffs are part of efforts to streamline operations and redirect resources into high-priority areas, particularly artificial intelligence, which continues to reshape the global tech industry.

The development follows earlier workforce reductions within some divisions of the company this year, highlighting a wider trend across the tech sector where firms are cutting jobs while ramping up AI investments.

Industry analysts say the decision underscores the growing impact of automation, as companies increasingly adopt digital tools to replace or restructure traditional roles.
