medical expert call for better breastfeeding policies in workplaces

The Rivers state chairman of the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Doctor Vetty Agala gave the advice in an interview with Today Fm.

Agala identified rigid work place policies as one of the major challenges being faced by breast feeding mothers, particularly on the recommended six months of exclusive breast feeding.

Doctor Betty Agala who encouraged nursing mothers to take advantage of the week by visiting health centers for more tips on healthy breastfeeding, also dispelled some myths about the practice of exclusive breast feeding.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated annually from August 1 to 7 in commemoration of the 1990 Innocent Declaration, an effort by the World Health Organization and UNICEF to “protect, promote and support breastfeeding”.

The theme for this year’s edition is “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.”
