A coalition of media veterans, publishers, and media managers in Rivers State has strongly condemned the recent attack on an Arise Television crew and a former state commissioner in Port Harcourt.
Speaking under the umbrella of the Port Harcourt Press, the group described the assault as a direct threat to press freedom and public safety.
Addressing journalists, the spokesperson of the coalition, Ogbonna Nwuke, said the attack appeared deliberate, aimed at intimidating journalists and creating an atmosphere of fear ahead of next year’s elections.
Nwuke also criticized the Police for what he called a lack of urgency in addressing the incident and urged the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to exercise restraint in public statements to avoid further escalation of tensions.
The group called for immediate action to protect journalists and ensure a safe environment for media operations in the state.
