Liberia’s Supreme Court Halts Presidential Runoff Due to Alleged Vote Fraud

The presidential runoff between GEORGE WEAH and incumbent Vice President JOSEPH BOAKAI was billed to hold next week, but the third place candidate in the first round approached the Supreme Court to claim vote rigging.
CHARLES BRUMSKINE’s Liberty Party and the Elections Commission are expected to file briefs by tomorrow at the latest, but it is not clear if the court would rule before 7th November when the runoff is expected to take place.
The ruling Unity Party is also backing the legal challenge, after accusing President ELLEN JOHNSON SIRLEAF of interfering in the election on 10th October by holding private meetings with election magistrates.
President JOHNSON SIRLEAF denied that the meeting was inappropriate, just as international observers like the European Union and the Carter Center have said that they saw no major problems with the first round vote.
